If you are reading this page, you are no doubt acquainted with the insidious nature of anorexia and are aware of how it has impacted every area of your life. What you may not know, however, is that you are not alone in the fight against this disorder. You deserve to have your life back and to no longer be plagued by the symptoms of anorexia nervosa. At Center for Hope of the Sierras, we believe in your strength, courage, and ability to heal from anorexia, and we would be honored to be your ally in the fight against this debilitating disorder.
When anorexia nervosa is discussed, more often than not, the focus is on women who struggle with this mental health condition. However, experts in the field of mental health have noted an increase in men who also battle this form of disordered eating. Similar to the psychological distortions experienced by females, males who grapple with anorexia nervosa have altered perceptions of self, which ultimately lead to ritualistic, controlled, and/or restricted eating habits. Additionally, males who struggle with anorexia may be preoccupied with physical fitness and push their bodies to the limit when it comes to toning muscle, lifting weights, or bodybuilding. Males may also focus on a specific body part under the assumption that that body part is not as aesthetically pleasing as it could be. Subsequently, these men may do all that they can to decrease body fat, ignoring any health concerns that may arise as a result of their rigid behaviors. However, these consequences can be avoided. By engaging in treatment that is catered to and addresses the unique concerns of men who are struggling with anorexia, it is possible for you to overcome the symptoms of anorexia and return to life with improved mental and physical health.
At Center for Hope of the Sierras, we understand the apprehension and intimidation that many boys and men feel when seeking out treatment for anorexia nervosa. For this reason, we have created specialized programming that is designed to meet your specific and unique needs as you works towards recovering from this disorder.
Types of Treatment Offered at Center for Hope of the Sierras
Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Center for Hope of the Sierras offers a serene setting for you to seek refuge as you fight to overcome the symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Knowing the unique challenges that you face when seeking and receiving treatment for this devastating condition, Center for Hope is proud to offer residential treatment for males 16 and older, as well as intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) that are tailored to meet the needs of adolescent and adult males, ages 14 and older.
When you engage in treatment for anorexia at Center for Hope, you will be provided with a highly structured schedule that includes supported meals, pre and post-group sessions that meet after each meal, and special outings where you can practice the skills you are learning in treatment by applying them in a real-world setting. In addition to providing comprehensive treatment for any type of eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa, our programs also offer treatment for males who are struggling with diabulimia or co-occurring mental health disorders. Additionally, if you are battling an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol, you can receive specialized treatment that addresses your co-occurring substance use disorders. You will have the opportunity to be transported to 12-Step meetings three to five times per week in order to obtain further support as you work towards recovery from your addictions. We are also happy to accommodate you if you have special dietary needs due to celiac disease, or if you follow a vegetarian or vegan diet.
At Center for Hope, our treatment approach is grounded in an intuitive eating philosophy. This philosophy suggests that food is simply fuel for our bodies, so we seek to remove a dieting mentality and replace it with balanced and joyful eating. Through developing proficiency in intuitive eating, we aim to restore in you a sense of trust in your body’s ability to guide your eating decisions, thus laying a foundation for lifelong healthy eating practices.
During your time at Center for Hope, you will be provided with individualized treatment plans that may include the following therapeutic interventions:
Medication management: When you are battling symptoms of co-occurring mental health conditions in addition to anorexia, the use of certain psychotropic medications may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. The actual implementation of any medications, however, is always determined on an individualized basis. If your needs include medication management, you will have the opportunity to meet with a psychiatrist once per week, and registered nurses are available to organize medication management services.
Individual therapy: During residential treatment you will receive three individual sessions each week with your primary therapist. In the partial hospitalization program, you will meet with your primary therapist twice each week for individual therapy sessions. These one-on-one sessions are designed to provide a safe and confidential setting where you can confront any challenges that you are facing, discuss any concerns that you are having, and process through your treatment experiences as a whole.
Group therapy: Group therapy is one of the main components of treatment offered in each of our treatment programs. Led by therapists and social workers, you may participate in one to four group therapy sessions each day, Monday through Friday. The specific types of groups and the various topics discussed in these groups may include the following:
- Anxiety management
- Body image
- Co-occurring disorders
- Family systems
- Life skills
- Mindful eating
- Process group
- Music and art appreciation
- Recovery maintenance
Experiential therapy: When you are receiving treatment for anorexia, you will have the opportunity to take part in a number of experiential therapy options in addition to more traditional treatments. These experiential therapies typically occur on a weekly basis and may include the following:
- Lunch Out Challenge
- Body In Motion
- Grocery shopping
- Cooking class
- Equine therapy
- Creative expressions
If you take part in the partial hospitalization program at Center for Hope of the Sierras, you have the option of residing in an unsupervised, offsite apartment. All PHP services are provided at an office that is located within three miles of Center for Hope’s residential treatment center.
Keeping in mind that you may require extended care services following the completion of treatment in PHP, Center for Hope of the Sierras is pleased to offer programming through our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Therapists work closely with you in order to ensure that the decision to receive continuing care services following PHP is made based on what is appropriate for your needs. Additionally, our aftercare coordinator stays in contact with you for six months following discharge from programming and will check in with you at various intervals throughout that time to make sure that your transition has been a smooth and comfortable one.
If you are struggling with anorexia nervosa and would benefit from receiving care that is catered to meet your unique needs as a man, look no further than Center for Hope of the Sierras. We want to help you see the brighter side of tomorrow.
