If you are a male who is dealing with an eating disorder, you know all about the physical pain, the emotional suffering, and the myriad of ways in which this eating disorder can impact virtually every aspect of your life. There is a good chance that you are also familiar with the preponderance of misinformation that unfortunately persists about men and eating disorders. As you may also know, this combination of a potentially devastating disorder, and rampant misunderstanding about the nature of the problem, has conspired to stop many people from getting the help that they need.
We are happy that you have not allowed these issues to dissuade you from researching treatment options, and we are honored that you have taken the time to learn more about how Center for Hope of the Sierras can help.
By researching treatment options, you retain two of the elements that are essential to overcoming an eating disorder: courage and hope. You show courage every day that you do not allow yourself to be defined by your disorder, and you demonstrate hope by searching for the help that can put you back on the path to a healthier and more promising tomorrow. At Center for Hope, we can help you transform these powerful characteristics into the foundation of a healthier new life.
When you choose to heal with us, you will actively collaborate with dedicated professionals who are committed to providing you with the personalized care that will allow you to connect with your true inner spirit, overcome your disorder, and achieve to your greatest potential.
At Center for Hope of the Sierras, we recognize the anguish that surrounds an eating disorder diagnosis, and we also understand the worry that many boys and men feel when seeking out treatment for these disorders. For this reason, we have created specialized programming that is designed to meet the specific and unique needs of males who are battling eating disorders.
Types of Treatment Offered at Center for Hope of the Sierras
Located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Center for Hope of the Sierras offers a serene setting for individuals who are seeking refuge as they fight to overcome eating disorders. Knowing the unique challenges that males face when seeking and receiving treatment for this devastating condition, Center for Hope of the Sierras is proud to offer residential treatment for males 16 and older, as well as intensive outpatient programs (IOP) and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) that are tailored to meet the needs of adolescent and adult males ages 14 and older.
When you enroll in Center for Hope’s programs for men, you will follow a highly structured schedule that includes supported meals, pre and post-group sessions that meet after each meal, and special outings where you can practice the skills that you are learning in treatment by applying them in a real-world setting. In addition to providing comprehensive treatment for any type of eating disorder, we also offer treatment for males who are struggling with diabulimia or co-occurring mental health disorders. Additionally, if you are battling an addiction to alcohol or another drug, you can receive specialized treatment that addresses your co-occurring substance use disorders. You will also have the opportunity to be transported to 12-Step meetings three to five times per week in order to obtain further support as you work toward recovery.
Center for Hope is also proud to be one of the few residential eating disorder programs in the United States that accepts clients who follow vegan or vegetarian diets, or who have celiac disease.
A fundamental tenet of treatment at Center for Hope is the philosophy of intuitive eating. Regardless of the disorder for which you originally sought treatment, one of our primary objectives is to have you leave our care with the ability to be an intuitive, mindful eater. We will work closely with you to help you overcome the diet mentality, learn to embrace how food helps fuel your body, and gain an appreciation for how maintaining appropriate nutrition can help you respect your body and honor your health. We have found that by adhering to this philosophy, you can develop the greater sense of self-confidence that can be an essential component of long-term recovery from bulimia and other eating disorders.
During your time spent at Center for Hope, you will be provided with individualized treatment plans that may include the following therapeutic interventions:
Medication management: If you are battling symptoms of a co-occurring mental health condition in addition to an eating disorder, the use of certain psychotropic medications may be recommended as part of your treatment plan. The actual implementation of any medications, however, is always determined on an individualized basis. You will have the opportunity to meet with a psychiatrist once per week, and registered nurses are available to organize medication management services.
Individual therapy: As a residential client, you will receive three individual sessions with your primary therapist each week. While in our partial hospitalization program, you will meet with your primary therapist twice each week for individual therapy sessions. These one-to-one sessions are designed to provide a safe and confidential setting where you can confront any challenges that you are facing, discuss any concerns that you are having, and process through your treatment experience as a whole.
Group therapy: Group therapy is one of the main components of treatment offered in the partial hospitalization program, and therapists and social workers lead these. You may participate in one to four group therapy sessions each day, Monday through Friday. The specific types of groups and the various topics discussed may include the following:
- Mindful eating
- Body image
- Anxiety management
- Co-occurring disorders
- Family systems
- Life skills
- Music and art appreciation
- Recovery maintenance
- Process group
Experiential therapy: In addition to participating in the more traditional forms of therapy, you will also have the opportunity to take part in a number of experiential therapy options during your time in PHP. These therapies typically occur on a weekly basis and may include the following:
- Body In Motion
- Lunch Out Challenge
- Equine therapy (Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy offered weekly)
- Cooking class
- Grocery shopping
- Creative expressions
If you are enrolled in the partial hospitalization program at Center for Hope of the Sierras, you will have the option of residing in unsupervised, offsite apartments. All PHP services are provided at an office that is located within three miles of Center for Hope’s residential treatment center.
If you require extended care services following the completion of treatment in PHP, Center for Hope of the Sierras is pleased to offer programming through our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Our therapeutic staff will work closely with you in order to ensure that the decision to receive continuing care services following PHP is based on what is most appropriate for your needs. Additionally, our aftercare coordinator will check in with you at various intervals for six months following discharge to make sure that your transition has been a smooth and comfortable one.
