Treatment at Center for Hope of the Sierras

The Center for Hope of the Sierras offers treatment to adolescents and women ages 16 and up suffering from eating disorders.  Through highly individualized treatment programs, Center for Hope is able to help patients to redefine their lives by finding meaning based on their unique gifts, interests, and talents, separate from their body and their eating disorder.

Treatment at Center for Hope of the SierrasTo accomplish this, the Center offers a multitude of individual, family, and group therapies designed to promote healing. Group therapies include Cultural Awareness, Self-esteem and Body Image Group, Mindful Eating, Mind/Body Harmony, Poetry Group, Love in Action (Self Acceptance & Behavioral Activation), Interpersonal Process, Self Reflection, Food & Feelings, Pre & Post Meal Group, Imagery, Relapse Prevention and DBT Skills Groups. Patients also participate in our Community Connections Program, Equine Therapy, Art Therapy, Horticulture, Mindful Walking, Meditation, Yoga, Massage and Facials all encouraging self-care, self-respect, and an appreciation for the role of a gentle and mindful lifestyle.

In order to regain a healthy relationship with food, patients are actively involved in meal planning, grocery shopping and a variety of food challenges weekly.  Each individual meets one on one with Dr. Lorraine Platka-Bird, CHS’s dietician & nutrition therapist as well as Chef Anishah Davis to plan snacks and meals according to personal preferences & individual goals.  Once a patient achieves an appropriate level of health, they are invited to help prepare meals to work towards overcoming obsessive thoughts or compulsive behavior associated with their eating disorder. Restaurant outings are also a part of the program, helping patients learn to function in a society where "forbidden foods" are prolific.

With a treatment plan designed for transition back to daily life, patients also participate in a variety of recreational activities and outings including evenings at the movies, theater and community events, bowling, and arts & crafts like Clay Canvas and candle making.

Center for Hope also offers a Community Connections Program that provides the opportunity for patients to volunteer and give back to the community.  This unique program allows patients to find meaning in their lives outside of body preoccupation, and provides an important opportunity for them to experience their competence and ability to have an impact, all directed toward helping the patient redefine their own life.

Treatment for Life

Treatment for LifeIt is believed that individuals who suffer from eating disorders are challenged in their capacity to find their own sense of validation, vitalization, and positive self-regard, and have difficulty regulating their self-esteem and coping with anxiety. Our philosophy is that it is the patient's right to have a self; therefore, treatment emphasizes the need for patients to cope with the complex emotions that cause them to doubt this right, as well as the need for patients to take themselves and their physical and psychological needs seriously, leading them to experience themselves as valid and competent human beings.

It is our goal to make transition back to daily life as seamless as possible. Treatment is specifically designed to provide patients with the skills and support necessary for long-term healing as well as complete aftercare and recovery planning for their future.
